Truckee Walkway & Composite Entry Platform
Project Overview
Existing decking was removed and the substructure was modified to bring the new deck board level flush with the sewer cleanout lid, eliminating the slope toward the home. The framing was extended with pressure-treated lumber and tied together with Simpson hardware to support the new layout.
The deck surface was installed using TimberTech Advanced PVC composite decking. A matching TimberTech fascia board was heat-bent on site to wrap the curved leading edge of the platform, giving a clean finished perimeter and concealing the framing. Hidden fasteners were used on the field boards, with the surface above the sewer cleanout cut to match the lid's circular shape and drilled for removal access. The lid can be lifted out for maintenance without disturbing any decking.
The existing step framing alongside the home was filled with compacted decomposed granite, leveled into each tread for a stable, drainable walking surface that connects the new platform down to grade. Construction debris was hauled off using the company dump trailer.

Challenges & Solutions
A few site conditions shaped how this project was built.
The sewer cleanout cover had to remain fully accessible for service, which required the deck surface to be cut around the lid and made removable rather than fixed.
The original platform's reverse slope toward the home had to be corrected without changing the door threshold height, which dictated the new framing layout.
The decking transition over a circular access lid called for a heat-bent composite fascia, a technique that requires careful temperature control and a steady curve.
The result is a level, finished entry platform that drains away from the home and keeps the sewer access invisible until it's needed.
