Glenshire Primary Shower & Tub Surround Remodel
Project Overview
The project began with floor protection running from the home's entry through to the bathroom, dust containment at the bathroom doorway, and tub armor over the bathtub so it could stay in place through demolition. The shower walls, shower pan, and curb were taken down to the studs, and the tub deck, apron, and backsplash tile were removed down to the substrate. The original framed glass enclosure was removed and disposed of, and debris was hauled out by dump trailer.
With the walls open, the tub deck framing was repaired through a change order. Both shower mixing valves were replaced with the homeowner-selected valves, and the two shower heads were brought to a common height, correcting the mismatch in the original installation. The deck-mounted tub filler was replaced with a matching unit on a new three-hole rough-in valve, and the drain and curb plumbing were rerouted to suit the new shower pan.
Waterproofing was built with a GoBoard system. A new sloped GoBoard shower pan was set with a center drain, the shower walls were plumbed and squared before backer went on, and GoBoard was installed across all shower walls and over the tub deck, apron, and backsplash framing. A GoBoard curb was formed. All seams and fasteners were sealed per the manufacturer's specification, and the assembly was flood-tested for 24 hours before any tile was set. Two niches were framed and waterproofed through a change order, each with a tiled shelf, positioned to clear the plumbing routed to the two shower heads.
Tile installation used a 12x24 Travertino Brushed Silver running up the shower surround to the ceiling and across the tub deck, apron, and backsplash. The shower pan was finished in a 12x12 travertine mosaic in a 1-inch by 1.5-inch brick pattern, carried into the niche backs to tie the two materials together. Walls were set with leveling clips to hold the large-format tile flat through the initial cure, and Schluter trim was used at every outside corner. The tile was grouted, cleaned, and sealed.
Finish work included the two brushed nickel shower systems with fixed rainfall heads, hand showers, and pressure-balance valve trim, the matching deck-mounted tub filler, and a brushed nickel square drain grate. Paint was feathered at the boundaries where new tile met existing wall. Once the tile was complete, a custom enclosure in 1/2-inch and 3/8-inch clear tempered glass with brushed nickel hardware was templated to the finished walls and installed.

Reused In Place
Existing bathtub, protected through demolition and retained
Challenges & Solutions
Several conditions shaped the work:
The existing bathtub was retained, so the new deck, apron, and backsplash had to be rebuilt to the tub's existing dimensions and the tub protected with tub armor through demolition
The two original shower valves had been set at different heights, and both had to be reset to a common height during the rough-in
Niche placement was limited by the plumbing routed to the two shower heads, which set where the niches could land on the back wall
Tub deck framing repair was identified only after demolition opened up the platform, and was added by change order
A 24-hour flood test was held before any tile was set, which fixed the tile start against the test result
The glass enclosure was templated and installed only after tile was complete, so it could be fit to the as-built walls
Work was carried out in an occupied home, with floor protection maintained from the entry through to the bathroom for the duration
The finished bathroom pairs a two-head shower with the retained soaking tub, tied together by a single travertine package.
